October is all about picking out Halloween costumes for dogs! Whether you’re throwing a costume party – or attending one! – or going trick-or-treating with the kids, your pup is (likely) going to love dressing up too!
Since the boy is 16 now and obviously “too cool” to dress up for trick-or-treating, I have turned my attention to Porter. I bought a Darth Vader halloween costume for dogs for Porter two years ago, but the headpiece freaked him out so much and made him run for cover. In the chaos, he trampled on the cape and just killed any excitement for dressing up that year (and the following year).
Creative Halloween costumes for dogs
So here I am – rethinking this Halloween costume thing and looking for ideas and inspiration. I have a little hope that Porter – going on four in November – has matured a little and can handle dressing up without losing his mind. In my search, I came across the super cool two Golden Retrievers (@hoosiersfavoritegoldens) in their Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy and Cowardly Lion costumes. I’m not sure Porter would ever let me go this far.
Too cute to spook
Have you ever wondered what a dog dressed as Lady Gaga looks like? I have – being the movie-junkie-celebrity-gawking-dog-lover that I am. Look no further because Rover.com did just that!
With TV and movies as the biggest sources of inspiration for dog costumes this Halloween, the company shared a few images of dogs dressed as some of our favorite celebrities in their most memorable costumes from 2019 including Lady Gaga at the Met Gala, Elton John from Rocketman, and Billy Ray Cyrus with Lil Nas X.
Lady Gaga at the Met Gala
Olive the Boston terrier captures Lady Gaga’s bold glam beautifully.
Elton John from Rocketman
Willie the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever pulls off this eclectic Elton John ensemble from Rocketman like a pro.
Billy Ray Cyrus with Lil Nas X
I’m not a huge fan of Billy Ray Cyrus, but it’s easy to fall in love with Coconut the Samoyed and Lemon the golden retriever in this stylish Western get-up of the music video.
Is Your dog prepared for halloween?
A new survey by Rover.com found that more dogs are dressing up for Halloween this year.
A whopping 51 percent of dog owners say they plan to dress up their pup this Halloween. The Rover survey found:
- Classic costumes like witch or ghost and TV/movies are the biggest sources of inspiration for dog costumes.
- 52 percent of pet parents say they or a member of their family will be dressing up with their dog this Halloween.
- 40 percent of pet parents cited their dog’s costume will be purchased this year, while nearly 20% will be homemade.
- 51 percent of pet parents said their dog will be an active participant in either trick-or-treating or handing out candy.
- Roughly a quarter of dog parents plan to enter their dog into a costume contest or dog-friendly Halloween event.

And if that wasn’t surprising, a separate study found that U.S. consumers will spend $490 million on costumes to dress up their pets this Halloween — double what they spent for cats, dogs and other animals in 2010, according to the National Retail Federation’s Annual Halloween Spending Survey.
Top halloween costumes for dogs this year include pumpkins, hot dogs and superheroes — because every pup is a superhero in their owner’s heart.
While I don’t think we’ll come close to looking spooky cool this year, I’m hoping to find something that will garner us a few compliments, attention and (for Porter) a head rub or two.
